Christian Community Music Awards 2013 Launched

This year’s edition of the Christian Community Music Awards being organised by Christian Community Microfinance Limited (CCML), a division of the Christian Council of Ghana, has been launched.

The awards dubbed “The Most Wanted” seeks to showcase and reward deserving songs and their artistes by promoting all gospel music.

The awards would reward Christian songs from 10 categories including praises, worship, inspirational, Christian reggae song, hymns, and choral.

Kojo Oppong Adjei, Communication Director of CCML, who performed the launching ceremony held at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra, noted that CCML decided to take the radio contest to a higher pedestal in order to give it a wider coverage.

He said Ghanaian gospel musicians, over the years, have been performing very well so they deserve to be acknowledged.

Mr Adjei said the overall award winner’s price would be invested in treasury bills over the next five years to generate more income for the person.

Nominations have, therefore, been opened to the general public to vote for the candidates of their choice from now until May 16, to be followed by the awards ceremony in Accra on May 18, 2013, at the National Theatre.

Jennifer Jessica Danquah, CCMA Events coordinator, said the awards ceremony, titled: “The Most Wanted,” would be on the theme: “Creatable Impacting Levels”.

She said songs nominated for the awards would be published in the Daily Graphic and also played on some selected radio stations such as Spring, Sweet Melody and Sunny FM during the late afternoon shows.

Ms Danquah said readers and listeners could then make their choice by texting to short code 1903 or visit their website: www.ccmagh.com to vote.

She said the final decision would be based on 50 percent for texting and the rest from the decision of the judges on the day of the contest.

Why I Did Not Feature Kwabena Kwabena In My Video -Asem

Popular hiplife artiste, Asem has commented on rumours that he intentionally sidelined Kwabena Kwabena when it came to the making of the video for their hit collaboration, Bye Bye.

The two artistes recorded the song together and it is on Asem’s 16-track Solid Ground album. Apart from Kwabena Kwabena, other artistes on the album were Irene Logan, Dampoo, DJ Black and JR from South Africa.

A few weeks ago, Kwabena Kwabena said on Etv’s Late Night Celebrity Show that he did not take any money from Asem for his contribution to Bye Bye but couldn't explain why he wasn't in the video.

That gave rise to speculation that a rift had cropped up between the artistes. Asem, however, explains that he was in Paris by the time fans were expecting the Bye Bye video and he had no option than to go ahead with it without Kwabena Kwabena.

“I had no intention of sidelining Kwabena Kwabena. We could not be in the video together due to miscommunication. Anytime I was ready for Kwabena Kwabena, he was busy with other things. I also could not be available when he was free and since the song was all over the place, I needed to shoot the video.”

Asem said he received a lot of comments from his fans asking why Kwabena Kwabena wasn't in the Bye Bye video. He apologized to fans who felt hurt by Kwabena Kwabena’s absence in the video.

“Kwabena Kwabena and I have sat over the issue since I got back from Paris and we have resolved it. There is more collaboration coming up between us.” Asem described Kwabena Kwabena as a talented musician and added that his unique touch on Bye Bye contributed to him (Asem) getting seven nominations at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Kwabena Kwabena would not say much on the perceived rift when contacted. He, however agreed that there was miscommunication over the issue and that was why he did not appear in the video.

Noted for other songs like No More Kpanyo and Pigaro, the handsome young artiste said the success of Bye Bye has proved that the Asem brand is not dead. He revealed that his next album would be ready by his next birthday on July 3.

Insulting P-Square was childish – Bandana tells Samini

Bandana

Was it right or wrong for Ghanaian dancehall colossus Samini to have chastised Nigerian music duo P-Square for their ‘Alingo’ dance?

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Junior popularly known in showbiz circles as Bandana thinks it was childish for Samini to have done a song to diss the duo. He says it will be difficult to defend in the law court that P-Square stole our Azonto.

He said in an interview with Flex newspaper that the ‘Alingo’ dance is on its own just as ‘Azonto’. “There is this saying that pay attention to your interior matters. Any time I do music that has something to do with him he doesn’t reply but saw it necessary to respond to P-Square. He has painted a bad picture about Ghana,” he noted.

Did Bandana hit it straight to the point or he is just being a 'player-hater' or is he trying to get a kind of favour from P-Square, what do you think?

Empire Entertainment & Okyeame Kwame’s deal for this Thursday

Bolaraykwame

Nathaniel Kwabena Anokye Adisi also known as Bola Ray is set to make history with the signing of Okyeame Kwame unto his entertainment powerhouse Empire Entertainment which houses other musicians like Guru, Double, Dr. Slim and other talented Ghanaian artistes who are being nurtured for mainstream success.

The history making signing is scheduled for Excel Lounge on Thursday, March 28. Contrary to what people are saying, Okyeame Kwame will not abandon his own record label, instead, Empire Entertainment will team up with the label to project his brands as well as handle his PR and other important areas.

This is not the first time, a top rapper is being signed by a vibrant management company like Empire but what perhaps separates this signing from that of the many is that both brands have distinguished themselves well and earned great respect in their various endeavours.

Empire Entertainment owned by Nathaniel Kwabena Anokye Adisi over the years has established itself as a credible Event & Artiste Management Company. They have created a niche as not only reliable but as a force to reckon with in terms of organising events and building brands for entertainers.

Several successful events like ‘Ghana Meets Naija, ‘Color Blocking’ HOOK UP Party’ speak volume of Empire Entertainment’s authority in organizing success shows. They also contributed to the execution of the hugely success ‘Let It Rain Concert’ by Badu and the ‘Chris Brown Live in Ghana Concert’.

Over the last few years, Empire Entertainment has successfully designed and put together strong brands for artistes like Guru and Dr. Slim.

Okyeame Kwame on the other hand is a pure rap talent who has stayed true to the Hip Life genre and rightly so deserves the tagline “one of the biggest rappers of all time in Ghana” of his generation.

What such merger will bring to the entertainment industry in Ghana can only elevate the industry. Now can you understand why announcement of the signing last week has generated so much interest?

Radio Presenter Arrested Again

Princess Asie Ocansey at the CID headquarters yesterday

Princess Asie Ocansey, a lady pastor, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on fresh charges of human trafficking and other offenses including fraud.

The 52-year-old Chief Executive Officer of the Channel of Blessing Ministry was arrested in February this year on similar charges but was granted a GH¢20,000 bail.

The suspect was yesterday re-arrested following reports by more than a dozen young women claiming to be victims of the human trafficking business.

She was arrested about 9am and was quickly sent to her home at Trassaco then to her office at Tema for a thorough search by a team of CID officials.

Sources close to the CID unit told Daily Guide that the suspect owns three organizations namely Nacotec, Gold Tech and Channel of Blessing Ministry, which she claimed to be operating as non-governmental agencies but ended up using them as job placement agencies and a church.

The suspect, who hosts the Channel of Blessing programme on an Accra-based radio station on Saturday afternoons, preaches the word of God and mostly motivates her listeners with her inspirational messages.

At the end of each show, she advertises her organisation’s ability to recruit young and energetic people for job opportunities in countries in the Middle East such as Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, USA and Canada.

She often made her recruits, who were expected to be below age 35, to believe they would work as shopkeepers in supermarkets or as domestic servants and butchers.

Some young people were also recruited on Princess Ocansey’s visit to churches in Accra, Tema and other places.

The CID sources told Daily Guide that most of the victims, who had formally reported following an earlier report of the arrest of Princess Ocansey in the media, claimed she took various sums of monies as fee for her services. Some of the victims suffered the ordeal in 2009 and beyond.

“She charged some of her clients in local currency while for others she quoted US dollars,” said the CID sources who stated that the charges ranged between GH¢200 and $2000.

The police sources said since the suspect was granted bail after her first arrest, she had been on an “image cleansing campaign by personally calling some of her victims and refunding their monies to them Nicodemously”.

The suspect also held a press conference to deny that she had been arrested by the police for human trafficking.

She also reportedly solicited the support of pastors, chiefs and opinion leaders to either call on media houses which carried the story on her arrest to retract the story or issue rejoinders.

The police said investigations were still ongoing while preparations were underway to put her before court on charges of human trafficking and defrauding amongst others.

It would be recalled that on February 6, 2013, it was reported that based on a complaint by the US Embassy and a 27-year-old lady whose identity was not made known for security reasons, Princess Ocansey was arrested for human trafficking.

According to the story, the police said the young woman, who was a staunch Christian, was allegedly lured to Kuwait by the suspect, believing that she would live a better life but was shocked by what she went through on her arrival in the Middle East country.

The police said the young woman was pushed into prostitution and ended up in Ghana with a serious mental problem.

She claimed to have heard the announcement on the radio and followed up to Princess Asie Ocansey’s office in Tema. After a few days of orientation, seven of them were sent to Kuwait to work in a huge supermarket. She said on arrival, they were met by three Arab men who packed all them and their luggage into a car.

As soon as they arrived at their destination, their passports, luggage and mobile phones were taken from them. Thereafter, they were pushed into a room where they met young women from other countries.

They were not given water or food for the two days they stayed in the room with poor ventilation. It was locked from outside and opened when men from various recruiting agencies came to select those they thought could serve their purpose and took them away.

The victim said when she was picked by a man, she thought she was going to start work in a supermarket but she was moved from one location to another, sleeping with men, and at a point she passed out because she couldn’t take it anymore.

She was able to get in touch with her family through the doctor who treated her in the hospital in Kuwait, after which her relatives compelled Princess Ocansey to bring her back to Ghana.

Spotted in a white straight dress, Princess Ocansey prevented photojournalists from taking pictures of her yesterday when she returned from the search in her house. It was not immediately known if the police found any evidence in her house or office as police officers were tight-lipped.

Yes! I’m Pregnant, Cheated? No - Actress Emelia Brobbey

Emelia Brobbey

Popular actress, Emelia Brobbey would talk about anything and everything but hardly about her marriage which is always an out-of-bounds subject. “My marriage is very private and I intend to keep it as such”, she told Showbiz over the phone last weekend from her UK home.

“Some celebrities may be comfortable speaking publicly about their marriages but that is not me. I see marriage as a sacred thing which shouldn’t be in the public domain”.

Emelia was responding to a media report that accused her of infidelity and claimed that she was pregnant for another man who was not her husband.

Emelia told Showbiz that she would have preferred not to talk about the false report but for the wrong impression that may have been created by it.

Although Emelia confirmed that she was pregnant, she said she was pregnant for her husband she got married to not quite long ago.

“I divorced my former husband a little over one year ago after I found out that things were not working well for us. I asked for a divorce from my ex when I found out that he had three children without my knowledge.

“I got married to him without knowing he had kids and after I found out I said there was no way I could stay with such a man, I filed for a divorce and it was granted” Emelia explained to Showbiz.

Emelia Brobbey regretted the timing of the false publication as she is now enjoying a new life with her newly wedded husband. “How would my husband feel reading from a newspaper and on the Internet that his wife’s pregnancy was for another man?”

Emelia started acting in 2002 with the help of Daniel Adeley who introduced her to Miracle Films production for her first movie role in Tribal War.

Despite the fact that the role was a minor one, she took it and it served as a stepping stone to bigger ones.

Currently she has featured in over 50 movies which are a mix of Twi and English. They include War of Roses, Tribal War, Wo Nyamesom Mpo Ni, Hidden Passions, Blackmail, Afunumuba, Aku Sika, Ama Ghana, Sika Ye Abrantie, Obiyaa and Whose Fault.

Emelia had two nominations in the 2010 Ghana Movie Awards for Best Actress in Leading Role ( Local Language) and Most Favourite Actress categories alongside others such as Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson, Nana Ama Mcbrown and Rose Mensah popularly known as Kyeiwa.

Besides acting, Emelia has sterling teaching credentials. She trained and obtained a Teachers Certificate ‘A’ at the Kibi Presbyterian Training College and taught at Obuasi JSS complex, Martin Luther King School in Kumasi and Soul Clinic International School in Accra.

She also holds a Diploma in Journalism from Manifold Tutorial College and a Degree in Human Resource Management from Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

I'm Still Praying To God To Grant Me The Man Of My Dreams - Actress

Ama

When she abandoned her job as a presenter on BBC’s youth show, “Pass da Mic” in the UK in 2009, never did it cross the mind of Ama Konadu Abebrese that three years down the line she would be earning cheers and recognition from all over Africa as an accomplished actress.

Although becoming an actress was a dream she had been nursing since her childhood, the desire remained a dream until she met Leila Djansi of Turning Point Productiona few years ago at a film festival back in the UK.

Ama, who never gave up after being turned down at several auditions had to convince Leila to earn her the first role in the movie Sinking Sands.

Today, the outcome of her pursuing her dream has resulted in various high flyer awards and recognition beginning with the Best Actress in leading role at the African Movie Academy Awards in 2010.

Since then, the talented actress has not looked back.

For one whose name, Abebrese, translates as agony and anguish, it is quite interesting to note that she has been successful and continues winning awards in her relatively short career.

The awards include Best Actress at the Zimbabwe Film Festival, and several nominations including Best Actress at the Ghana Movie Awards , Favourite West African Actress at Screen Nation Awards -UK and Best Pan African Actress at Nigerian Entertainment Awards.

So what could have accounted for such a feat within this short period after spending most of her growing years in the United Kingdom where she built successful career in broadcasting only to return to her homeland country to pursue her long cherished dream?

The talented actress told Showbiz last Friday that it is a known fact that many Ghanaian artistes living in the Diaspora find it difficult to break through back home because of identity problems, accent and the exposure to different cultures which tends to be a major challenge but she ignored that as a hindrance and came down to Ghana.

Probably for individuals like Ama, combination of hard work, dedication, and a resolve to have her fair share of fame in a land she comes from, worked the magic.

“I have heard several people argue that I don’t deserve the awards that I receive but I want it to be noted that receiving an award has got nothing to do with the number of movies you have featured in and this is where I think that people get it wrong. It is quality that people look for not quantity as some people think. It is a wrong conception that needs to be erased” she said.

The actress said that she feels fascinated when people perceive her to be a “newcomer” in the industry remarking that “ You see, most people think that I am new in the industry but they have no idea how I have hustle to get to where I am now. Even now, some people still see me as an outsider when it comes to Ghana Movie Industry but I know what I stand for and what I hope to achieve as well”.

Currently, she has three movies to her credit namely “Sinking Sands”, “Ties that Bind” by Leila Djansi’s Turning Point Production and “Elmina” from the staples of Revele Production but Ama believes that she needs more challenging roles to reveal the other side of her.

“Everybody knows that I am not a quiet person but I have always played ‘softer’ roles. I go all out to have fun and get what I want but as an actress, I have to interpret my role so I put in my best to bring the best out of me. Maybe, playing a block buster movie with all the shootings all over will show the other side of me. I am looking forward to play such a role, what do you think?” she said amidst laughter.

Ama said that her ultimate dream of influencing the society positively has been a major factor in the selection of the scripts and productions she wants to be part of.

“I don’t believe in quantity but I believe in quality so even if in my career span of twenty years as an actress, I do just ten movies which have an impact on society, I will not be bothered. I want the projects I am involved in to affect the society positively and not just for the fame.

“I quite remember in a conversation with a colleague actress of mine, she could not remember the titles of some of the movies she has been in involved in. She could only remember four out of the about fifty movies she has starred in. That, I think should not be the case at all. I should value what I do.

“Personally, I love the acting craft so I take a particular interest in it and just don’t do it for fun. Again, I believe that whatever I do, I can do better or best so I don’t settle for anything”.

When asked if she would want to feature in a movie by Shirleyy Frimpong Manso’s Sparrow Production, this is what she had to say “Why not? If it is a good project, I won’t mind at all. I don’t want to select productions based on names but the quality and I must admit that I will love to work with Kwaw Ansah who I have idolised since infancy because he is a great movie maker not only in Ghana but globally”.

She said that even though she receives offers from producers outside the country, she is yet to receive a script from a Ghanaian producer and jokingly said “Maybe, their budget cannot accommodate me. Anyway, I know that some of my people are really making good money”.

She believes that her influence as an actress should not end in Ghana and Nigeria as has been the lot of most Ghanaian actresses but they must endeavour to extend their influence globally. “I will very much love to be on a South African, Kenya and Tanzania productions. I don’t think that we have to limit ourselves to Nigeria because we can go beyond that and I am looking forward to capture the hearts of Africa”.

The 20-something year-old lady who professes to be a staunch Christian says that she is still praying to God to grant her the man of her dreams to settle down soon and hopes that in the next five years, she would be happily married with kids while enjoying her award of her an Oscar prize which she is working towards.

She holds a B.A in Media Arts and Drama from St, Mary’s University College and in order to keep fit, she boxes at the gym to release stress. “I release my tension, stress and frustration on the boxing material every morning and I love to eat good because I love to eat”

Currently, the Head of productions at VIASAT 1, Ama Konadu Abebrese has had the privilege of interviewing international artistes like Akon and Ziggy Marley. “ I believe that I am growing into a better person so my admirers should be on the watch for the new Ama Konadu Abebrese”.

One of the nation’s finest screen divas and Best Actress in supporting role both at Ghana Movie Awards (GMA) and Kumawood Movie festival Awards 2012, Emelia Brobbey has allegedly found herself in sex scandal which has virtually brought her once blissful marriage on its knee.

The pretty actress alleged to be legally married, is said to have gone behind the husband to have a sexual affair with a married medical doctor (name withheld for now) of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital resulting in pregnancy.

Obviously irritated by his wife’s alleged infidelity, Emelia’s husband has reportedly walked out of the marriage.

However, to save the pretty actress for imminent disgrace, the medical doctor lover has allegedly arranged and flown her out of the country to the United Kingdom, where she is presently sojourned.

She is also said to be frantically working around the clock to regularise her stay as well as that of the unborn child.

Emelia Brobbey
A close family source who spoke to the P&P on strict condition of anonymity stated that Emelia, a mother of one, allegedly engaged in extra marital affair with the medical doctor on the blind side of the husband.

Emelia’s husband, allegedly got wind of the wife’s infidelity but she vehemently denied any wrongdoing until she was put in the family way by the lover. It was at that point that the husband allegedly decided to walk out of the marriage, leaving her solely for the medical doctor.

All attempts to reach Emelia in the UK or the medical doctor here in Ghana for their comments proved futile. Keep reading for an exclusive story on the life and activities of the said medical doctor, alleged to be responsible for the pregnancy as well as Emelia’s version of the story.
